What to know before you go
Nepal and Bhutan are the two foreign countries an Indian citizen can visit with no visa and, for Nepal, no passport — a voter ID is enough. That makes them the right first trip abroad for parents and grandparents, and the pilgrimage side is real: Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, Muktinath for the fit, and the monasteries of Bhutan.
Nepal is a flight from Delhi or Mumbai to Kathmandu, then Pokhara for the lake and the mountain views. Bhutan is a flight from Kathmandu or Delhi to Paro, and it is not cheap: the sustainable development fee is charged per person per night, though Indian nationals pay a lower rate than other visitors. We show that fee as its own line so there is no surprise.
The Tiger's Nest is a four-to-six-hour walk at altitude. We plan it for the last full day, with a rest day before, and we say honestly who should not attempt it.
