The short version
Malta’s single permit combines the work and residence authorisation in one application, filed by the employer with Identità (the Maltese identity agency) while the worker is still in India. Once approved in principle, the worker applies for a national visa to travel, and the residence card is issued after arrival. Demand is strongest in hospitality, healthcare support, construction and driving. Malta has tightened its rules on employer sponsorship and on changing jobs after arrival; we explain those limits before you accept an offer.
Who needs a visa
Indian citizens need a single permit — residence and work in one — approved by Identità in Malta on the employer’s application, followed by a national visa from the Maltese authorities in India. Short visits use a Schengen visa. The employer starts the process; you cannot apply for the permit yourself.

Document checklist

Passport and photographs
- Passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, with two blank pages
- Previous passports, if any
- Recent photographs to the mission’s specification (size and background differ by country)
From the employer
- Single permit application filed with Identità, with the employment contract
- Job description and the employer’s vacancy declaration
- Accommodation lease or declaration in Malta
From the applicant
- Qualification certificates and CV, with authentication where requested
- Police clearance certificate
- Medical fitness certificate and health insurance
- National visa form and photographs, after the approval in principle
Proof of funds
- Personal bank statements for the last six months, stamped by the bank
- Income tax returns for the last three years
- Salary slips (employed) or business registration and GST returns (self-employed)
- Fixed deposits, property or other assets where relevant
The process

Identità issues the approval; the national visa application is then lodged for travel.

Biometrics and the residence card are completed in Malta; we brief you on the timeline.
