The short version
Portugal issues work visas against a signed employment contract or promise of contract from a Portuguese employer, with the application lodged at the VFS centre for Portugal in India and decided by the consulate. Roles we see most are in hospitality, agriculture, construction and care. The country has repeatedly changed its rules for regularising workers already in the country; we file only the route that starts with a contract and a visa issued in India, because it is the one with a clear, lawful path to a residence permit after arrival.
Who needs a visa
Indian citizens need a residence visa for work in Portugal, applied for at VFS in India after a Portuguese employer has secured the right to hire, or under the job-seeker visa route. Short visits use a Schengen visa. Portugal’s routes have changed frequently in recent years; we confirm what is open before you commit.

Document checklist
The list as the mission publishes it, grouped by what it is for. Your counsellor confirms the exact set for your case — employed, self-employed, retired, student — before anything is filed.
Passport and photographs
- Passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, with two blank pages
- Previous passports, if any
- Recent photographs to the mission’s specification (size and background differ by country)
From the employer
- Employment contract or promise of employment, signed by the employer
- Employer’s registration and, where applicable, the labour authority’s opinion
- Accommodation details in Portugal
From the applicant
- Visa application form and photographs
- Criminal record certificate with apostille, and consent to a Portuguese record check
- Travel medical insurance for the initial stay
- Qualification and experience evidence matching the role
Proof of funds
- Personal bank statements for the last six months, stamped by the bank
- Income tax returns for the last three years
- Salary slips (employed) or business registration and GST returns (self-employed)
- Fixed deposits, property or other assets where relevant
The process
Step 1: Offer review
We check the contract, the employer and the role before you commit.
Step 2: Certificates
Police clearance with apostille, medical insurance and qualification documents assembled — these take the longest.
Step 3: VFS appointment
Application lodged in person with biometrics.
Step 4: Decision
The consulate may request further documents. On approval the visa is issued for entry; the residence permit is applied for in Portugal.
