The short version
A single Schengen visa covers the 29 European countries in the area for stays of up to 90 days in any 180. You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights (or the first country entered, if equal), usually through a VFS centre in Ahmedabad or Mumbai, with an in-person appointment for biometrics. Appointments fill up months ahead of the summer season, and the file must contain the full itinerary, hotels, flights and insurance before the appointment — which is why our holidays desk designs the trip first and the visa desk builds the file from it. Frequent travellers with a clean history are often issued multi-year visas.
Who needs a visa
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa for tourism, family visits or business in the 29 Schengen countries, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights, or the first country entered if the stay is evenly split. Holders of a valid residence permit for a Schengen state do not need one.

Document checklist
The list as the mission publishes it, grouped by what it is for. Your counsellor confirms the exact set for your case — employed, self-employed, retired, student — before anything is filed.
Passport and photographs
- Passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, with two blank pages
- Previous passports, if any
- Recent photographs to the mission’s specification (size and background differ by country)
Forms and insurance
- Signed application form for the main-destination country
- Travel medical insurance valid across the Schengen area with cover of at least €30,000
Proof of funds
- Personal bank statements for the last six months, stamped by the bank
- Income tax returns for the last three years
- Salary slips (employed) or business registration and GST returns (self-employed)
- Fixed deposits, property or other assets where relevant
Travel and stay
- Day-by-day itinerary
- Confirmed or refundable flight reservations
- Hotel confirmations, or an invitation and host details when staying with family
- Travel insurance for the full stay, where the country requires it
Ties to India
- Employment letter with approved leave dates, or business proof
- Property papers, family details and other evidence you will return
- For students: enrolment letter and a no-objection from the institution
The process
Step 1: Plan the trip
The itinerary, night count per country and main destination are fixed first, because they decide which consulate you apply to.
Step 2: Appointment
We book the VFS appointment for the correct country at the earliest slot; in summer this can be the constraint that sets your travel dates.
Step 3: File build
Flights, hotels, insurance, cover letter, bank statements and employment or business proof, assembled to the consulate’s checklist order.
Step 4: Biometrics and submission
You attend the appointment in person with the original documents; fingerprints are taken and the file is forwarded to the consulate.
Step 5: Decision
The passport is returned by courier or collected from the centre, with the visa sticker on approval.

Why Schengen area (Europe) applications get refused

- Bank statements that do not support the trip cost, or large unexplained deposits shortly before applying
- Weak evidence of ties to India: no job letter, no business proof, no family or property details
