The short version
The US B1/B2 visitor visa is decided in a short interview at the consulate in Mumbai (or the embassy in New Delhi, and other posts as appointments allow), after an online DS-160 form and a biometrics appointment. The documents matter less than in most countries and the interview matters more: the officer is deciding in a few minutes whether you have strong reasons to return to India. Interview wait times in India have varied from weeks to many months in recent years; we book the earliest slot and prepare you for the questions. A B1/B2 visa, once issued, is typically valid for ten years for multiple entries.
Who needs a visa
Every Indian passport holder needs a visa to enter the United States, including for transit. Tourism, visiting family and business meetings use the B-1/B-2 visitor visa, which is decided at an in-person interview. Holding a valid visa does not by itself admit you; the officer at the port of entry decides your stay.

Document checklist
The list as the mission publishes it, grouped by what it is for. Your counsellor confirms the exact set for your case — employed, self-employed, retired, student — before anything is filed.
Passport and photographs
- Passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay, with two blank pages
- Previous passports, if any
- Recent photographs to the mission’s specification (size and background differ by country)
Forms and appointment
- DS-160 confirmation page with barcode
- Visa fee receipt and the appointment confirmation for both the biometrics and the interview
Proof of funds
- Personal bank statements for the last six months, stamped by the bank
- Income tax returns for the last three years
- Salary slips (employed) or business registration and GST returns (self-employed)
- Fixed deposits, property or other assets where relevant
Ties to India
- Employment letter with approved leave dates, or business proof
- Property papers, family details and other evidence you will return
- For students: enrolment letter and a no-objection from the institution
Purpose of visit
- Invitation from family in the US with their status document, or a tourism itinerary
- For business: letter from the Indian employer and the US company, and conference or meeting details
- Previous US visas and travel history
The process
Step 1: Assessment
We review your purpose, travel history and ties, and tell you honestly whether the timing is right and what the officer is likely to ask.
Step 2: DS-160
The form is completed with you, line by line — inconsistencies between the DS-160 and the interview are the commonest reason for refusal.
Step 3: Fee and appointments
Fee paid, and the biometrics (VAC) and consular interview slots booked at the earliest available dates.
Step 4: Interview preparation
A mock interview with a counsellor covering the questions asked at the Mumbai consulate, and the documents to carry.
Step 5: Interview and passport
You attend in person. On approval the passport is returned by courier with the visa foil.

Why United States applications get refused
The reasons we see most, from refusal letters and from the mission’s own guidance. A file that addresses these before it is submitted is the whole point of using a consultant.
- Section 214(b): the officer is not satisfied you have strong enough ties to India to return
- Answers at the interview that do not match the DS-160 or the documents
- A vague purpose of visit, or a host in the US whose own status is unclear
- Travel history that does not match the stated purpose, or previous overstays and refusals not declared

Yes, and there is no waiting period, but applying again with the same file usually produces the same result. 214(b) means the officer was not convinced you would return; a re-application should show what has changed — employment, property, travel history or the purpose of the trip.
