What to know before you go
Kashmir is a flight from Ahmedabad to Srinagar, and then a week that needs no long drives: Gulmarg is two hours away, Pahalgam three, Sonamarg two and a half. We build the itinerary around a houseboat night on Dal Lake at the start, a hotel in Srinagar in the middle, and a night in Pahalgam so the family is not in a car every day.
Two things decide the trip. The first is the season: April to June for tulips and green valleys, September and October for clear skies, December to February for snow at Gulmarg. The second is the gondola at Gulmarg, which sells out — we book the phase-one and phase-two cabins in advance so nobody stands in the queue.
We use Gujarati-friendly hotels with vegetarian kitchens, and a driver who has done the route with our families for years. That is the whole product.
