What to know before you go
Udaipur is a five-hour drive from Vadodara, which changes the shape of a Rajasthan holiday: no flight, no airport transfer, and the car that takes you there stays with you for the week. That is how we run it. Udaipur for the lakes, Jodhpur for Mehrangarh, Jaisalmer for the fort and a night in the dunes, and back through Mount Abu if the family wants a hill station on the way home.
The desert camp is the part people remember, and the part that goes wrong most often. There are two hundred camps outside Jaisalmer and perhaps twenty worth sleeping in. We use the same three every season. Camel ride at sunset, dinner and folk music at the camp, and a clean tent with a proper bathroom.
Winter is the season. October to March is comfortable; May and June are not a holiday for anyone.
