What to know before you go
The North-East is the trip for families who have done Kerala, Kashmir and Rajasthan and want somewhere their neighbours have not been. It starts with a flight to Guwahati, a morning at Kamakhya, and a drive to Kaziranga for a jeep or elephant safari to see the one-horned rhino. Then across the state line to Shillong, and on to Cherrapunji for waterfalls and the root bridges.
The root-bridge walk at Nongriat is three thousand steps down and three thousand back up. It is the best thing in Meghalaya and it is not for everyone; we plan an easier day for the elders and the children while the fit ones go. Dawki's clear river and Mawlynnong village fill the last day.
Seasons matter here more than anywhere. Kaziranga is closed in the monsoon and best from November to April; Meghalaya's waterfalls are at their fullest from June to September. We pick the month for the thing you most want to see.
